Savannah Shepherd is a Legal Assistant in the Washington, DC office of Sanford Heisler Sharp McKnight, a national law firm with offices in the District of Columbia, New York, California, Tennessee, and Maryland. She received her B.A. from Swarthmore College, where she created a special major in education, race, and media. In 2018, Savannah founded the Delaware Social Justice Remembrance Coalition, which partners with the Equal Justice Initiative to recognize and accessibly educate communities about lynchings in the United States. In doing this work, Savannah traveled to various conferences, schools, and libraries talking about the necessity of racial reconciliation and truth-telling. The coalition’s current efforts are focused on community organizing, popular education, and further research into potential lynching victims who have not yet been recorded. While at Swarthmore College, Savannah was on the executive board of the Swarthmore Afro-American Student Society (SASS), where she took on the roles of Historian and Creative Director. Through this position, Savannah spent time in the Swarthmore Archives creating a more digestible timeline of the Black experience at the college and helped organize a variety of events and programs for Black students. From 2022-2024, Savannah was a Senior Associate at the Women’s Resource Center at Swarthmore College, tasked with organizing programs and events advocating for the intersectional rights of women and the LGBTQ+ community. With a deep passion for prison abolition and Black liberation, Savannah plans to attend law school in the near future with a focus in civil rights law.
