Nitya Marimuthu is a Legal Assistant in the Palo Alto office of Sanford Heisler Sharp, a national law firm with offices in the District of Columbia, New York, California, Tennessee, and Maryland. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in political science and a minor in crime and justice.

While at the University of Michigan, Nitya received high honors for her thesis titled “Does Lived Experience with Incarceration Affect Criminal Justice Policy Beliefs?” She also built community with system-impacted people through the Prison Creative Arts Project, facilitating creative writing and theater workshops at the Cooper Street Correctional, Cotton Correctional, and Women’s Huron Valley Correctional facilities. Nitya served as an intern for Telling It, a resilience-building, transformative justice program at the Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention Center. She is a strong advocate for transformative and restorative justice, consistently involving herself in decarceration efforts. Nitya also was an editor of the International Politics section of the Michigan Journal of Political Science for two years.

In her free time, Nitya loves to build community through food, working out, and participating in various activist efforts. She is always up for spending quality time over well-brewed coffee and tea. Fueled by her strong belief in the possibility of change and equity, Nitya plans to attend law school.
