Investigation into Past Abuses at RICA – Baltimore
Sanford Heisler Sharp McKnight is investigating allegations of child sexual abuse at the Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (RICA – Baltimore), a state-operated juvenile mental health treatment facility located in Baltimore City, Maryland, with its sister facility located in Rockville, Maryland.
Our law firm is currently representing a survivor who alleges he was sexually abused while he attended RICA – Baltimore in the 1970s. Under a 2023 Maryland law called the Maryland Child Victims Act, adult survivors of child sexual abuse can file civil lawsuits against the individual perpetrators and institutions that enabled the abuse, regardless of how long ago the abuse occurred.
Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse Can File Claims
We are seeking to speak with other adult survivors who were victims of child sexual abuse while they attended RICA – Baltimore, and who may also have civil claims against the facility. Like the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Maryland’s juvenile residential centers are currently experiencing an overdue reckoning with their history of child sexual abuse, and the Maryland Child Victims Act is giving survivors a new legal avenue to seek a measure of justice for the harms that were committed against them.
Schools Have a Duty to Protect a Child’s Well-being
We understand how difficult it can be to come forward to disclose sexual abuse. Led by attorney Christine Dunn, Sanford Heisler Sharp McKnight's Sexual Violence, Title IX and Victims’ Rights Practice Group has helped sexual abuse and sexual assault survivors get justice through the civil court system, securing millions of dollars in settlements for our clients while holding schools, religious institutions, government agencies, and other private and public entities accountable for causing our clients harm.
Sanford Heisler Sharp McKnight is a nationally recognized civil rights law firm with six offices across the country. If you believe you have a claim against RICA – Baltimore or other relevant information, please fill out the contact form below.
