Case type: [Race Discrimination] and [Harassment]

Filed in: [U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York]

Case Summary

On April 18, 2006, Sanford Heisler Sharp filed a class action lawsuit against Super Steel Schenectady on behalf of current, former, and future employees of the Glenville, N.Y., manufacturing plant, alleging race discrimination in violation of Title VII of The Civil Rights Act.

The Plaintiffs were nine Black former employees of Super Steel Schenectady. The Complaint alleged that employees were regularly subjected to racist threats and taunts from white co-workers and suffered disparate terms and conditions of employment from their white supervisors, among other forms of discrimination. Moreover, complaints about the harassment and discrimination were met by supervisors with indifference or threats of retaliation.

The case was settled for $1.25 million in monetary damages and a consent decree that effected significant reform in Super Steel Schenectady.
