Medical Malpractice and Mass Torts

We know all too well that innocent people often suffer terribly due to avoidable medical tragedies. Sanford Heisler represents clients with claims stemming from medical malpractice, personal injury, and mass torts.  At Sanford Heisler, we are committed to holding negligent institutions, corporations, and individuals accountable for the harm they cause.

Medical malpractice errors are responsible for approximately 98,000 wrongful deaths each year, and the harm suffered as a result cannot be reversed. According to a Harvard University study, more than one million people every year suffer injuries due to mistakes caused by doctors, other hospital staff, medication, or malfunctioning medical devices. Similarly, mass torts occur when a large number of people are injured by the same harmful event or defective product. Injured individuals, whether victims of a singular medical error or of a wide-spread problem, have the right to legal recourse to help them put their lives back together.

At Sanford Heisler, we seek compensation for our clients for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and more. Some of these cases, such as one involving the wrongful death of an infant due to gross medical malpractice, are resolved with confidential, undisclosed settlements. Others are resolved through publicly-filed lawsuits.

Some examples of our cases include:

Parkhurst v. WASA

Sanford Heisler represents the District of Columbia’s children in a class action against the DC Water and Sewer Authority (WASA), seeking monetary and injunctive relief. In 2001, Washington DC’s Water and Sewer Authority changed the chemicals it used as a part of the water purification process. The new chemicals caused excess amounts of lead to leach into the water. Although WASA was alerted to the fact that its water was poisonous, it did nothing to remedy the situation, instead taking steps to conceal the problem while continuing to assure DC’s citizens the water was safe. Vioxx

Sanford Heisler served as co-counsel in over 200 Vioxx matters against the drug manufacturer Merck. The Vioxx matters settled for approximately $20 billion dollars. More

Mekonnen v. Innova Health System, et al.

Sanford Heisler currently represents a client seeking restitution from Fairfax Innova Hospital, where abdominal surgeries left her disfigured and in chronic pain. Our client and her family are not native English speakers, and were not provided the attention or care they deserved. The case is now pending. Confidential Medical Malpractice Against a Hospital and Doctor

Sanford Heisler recently represented a family whose child died due to medical malpractice of a hospital and attending physician. The parties reached a seven-figure settlement before the complaint was formally filed.
